As a way of background, the Voting Opportunity and Translation Equity (V.O.T.E.) Ordinance was established to address a lack of ballots and election materials in languages other than English that was a proven barrier to full participation in civic affairs.
Cook County now has a voting system that provides for written and verbal translation of all ballots in each of the 1431 election day precincts and 54 early voting locations on touch screens in each of the 12 languages authorized by the VOTE ordinance. The following languages are available: English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Ukrainian, Korean, Russian, Urdu, Gujarati, Arabic, Tagalog, and Polish.
Community Language Advocates who translate election material are needed to be proactive in updating the communities served on language choices and assist in communications efforts to recruit election workers to serve in precincts.
Language Advocates are needed to reduce barriers in the many technically worded rules pertaining to voting and provide accurately translated guidance in their own language to deliver an equitable solution focused on inclusion and expanding access to the civic process.
We are looking to immediately add additional staff to assist in Tagalog. The positions are part time hourly, and the individuals are compensated at $45 / hour.
